Chapter 309: Like a Ship at Ocean

The aroma of linseed oil and lapis lazuli is thick in the painter’s studio. Our Margery is in a world where photography never was, where automatons and skilled masters sit side-by-side in long rooms and paint the events of the day for broadsheets and public forums.

“Here it is,” says the docent, leading Margery to a canvas drying by the window. “One of our correspondents painted this yesterday on location in Syracuse. We aren’t sure what exactly caused the explosion, but what we found most puzzling is here, in the foreground. See? It’s a little girl, flying through the air.”
